About the Event

The Belgian Climate Centre is organising a workshop ‘Climate litigation in Belgium and beyond’, on Wednesday 11 September 2024.

This event is the first of a series of thematic “science for climate action” workshops to take place on a regular basis at the Belgian Climate Centre. The aim of this program is to gather academic and non-academic experts, decision-makers from the public and private sectors, and representatives of the civil society, around key climate-related research themes encompassing a broad range of scientific domains, from the physical climate and terrestrial science to technologies and humanities.

This first workshop will take stock of the various climate cases brought before the courts in Belgium and abroad and will provide an opportunity to address a range of questions and issues raised by these still emerging disputes. The workshop will focus on the typology of these actions, the way in which science is used in trials, issues related to the separation of powers, and the influence of these trials beyond the legal action itself.

The workshop program was established in collaboration with a scientific board composed of Professors Charles-Hubert Born (UCL), Hendrik Schoukens (UGent), Emmanuel Slautsky (ULB) and Romain Weikmans (ULB).
