Job Vacancy: Climate Services Lead (FR/NL) — apply by 15 November 2026
The Belgian Climate Centre (BCC) is looking for a Climate Services Lead (SW2) to coordinate the development of its climate services and bridge the gap between scientific research and public/private decision-makers across Belgium.
Established in 2021 as a federal scientific centre of excellence, the BCC strengthens climate research across Belgium, facilitates the transfer of knowledge to policymakers, businesses, and citizens, and develops climate services grounded in solid scientific foundations. It is integrated within the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium in Uccle, Brussels.
The role
Sitting at the crucial interface between the scientific community and public/private stakeholders, the Climate Services Lead coordinates the development of climate services in response to user needs and contributes to tools that make climate data accessible and actionable.
The position covers three main areas of responsibility:
Coordination and development of climate services: Elaborating an integrated strategy and activity programme for the BCC’s climate services; managing supporting research projects in collaboration with RMI teams; identifying scientific collaboration opportunities at federal, regional (e.g. VITO, CERAC), and European/international levels (C3S, EURO-CORDEX, IPCC).
Knowledge transfer, valorisation, and dissemination: Valorising research outputs, such as national climate projections (CORDEX.be) and derived indicators, for target audiences and the media; contributing to the BCC’s Climate Data Portal; drafting policy briefs and syntheses; and co-organising flagship events (such as the biennial Belgian Science for Climate Action conference).
Strategic priorities, governance, and communication: Contributing to the definition of the BCC’s research priorities, work programmes, and activity reports, as well as acting as a scientific expert for media enquiries.
Profile
Education: Candidates hold a PhD in Climatology/Climate Data, or a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline (Climatology, Physics, Mathematics, Environmental Sciences, Geography, Geology, or related) combined with at least 4 years of relevant professional experience.
Experience: A minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in climatology research and/or the development of climate services, including scientific project management.
Skills: Deep scientific knowledge of climatology (modelling and data analysis), strong familiarity with the Belgian and European climate landscape, and a proven ability to translate complex scientific data for non-specialists.
Languages: This position is open to both French- and Dutch-speaking roles (FR/NL). A good command of French, Dutch, and English is a strong asset.
What we offer
A 2-year renewable fixed-term contract at the SW2 scientific scale (minimum gross annual salary of €69,970.83 at the current index, excluding regulatory allowances).
A fulfilling working environment at the Space Pole in Uccle (Brussels) with high societal impact.
A strong work-life balance (flexible 38-hour week, teleworking options with allowance, 26 days of annual leave plus office closure between Christmas and New Year) and a comprehensive federal benefits package (free public transport commute, cycle allowance, meal vouchers, hospitalisation insurance, and supplementary pension).
