The Belgian Climate Centre is seeking a Head of Department to direct its team and mission.
The position seeks a candidate who combines in-depth knowledge in a research field relevant to the climate transition (such as Physical Climate, Earth and Life Sciences, Society, or Technology) with strong management skills, a strategic and political vision, and experience in or with the public sector or research institutions.
As Head of Department, you will be responsible for achieving the strategic and operational objectives of the Belgian Climate Centre. You will ensure that the Centre, as a department of the Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI), effectively fulfils its pivotal role between research, policy, and the practical application of climate action. You will build and lead a team of eight employees, with plans to grow to at least ten people.
Your Responsibilities:
Strategic and Scientific Leadership
Develop and implement the strategy for the Belgian Climate Centre
Guide cross-cutting activities focusing on multidisciplinary collaboration, scientific excellence, and societal added value
Establish a permanent research programme with Federal Scientific Institutions and Belgian universities
Organisation and Staff Management
Manage a dynamic team of multidisciplinary scientists and collaborators
Support professional development and provide performance feedback
Facilitate inter-institutional cooperation and co-financing projects
External Communication and Stakeholder Management
Represent the Centre to authorities, institutions, companies, NGOs, and media
Develop sustainable collaborations with research bodies and public institutions
Serve as point of contact for climate services
Governance and Reporting
Prepare meetings and facilitate Steering and Scientific Committees
Develop annual work programmes and activity reports
Ensure compliance with federal regulations and procedures
Financial Management
Manage the Centre's budget in line with strategic objectives
Develop funding strategies including European and international sources
Report on financial situation and departmental risks
Climate Scientific Council Representation
Represent the Centre on the Climate Scientific Council per the Law of 15 January 2024
Note: This position requires neutrality in public interactions per Royal Decree of 2 October 1937.
About the Belgian Climate Centre
The Belgian Climate Centre is a federal centre of scientific excellence created in 2021 to strengthen climate research and transition. Integrated within the Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI), it maximises scientific impact on climate mitigation and adaptation whilst serving as a contact point for organisations, policymakers, and citizens.
As Head of Department, you will report to RMI management and collaborate with various committees and Federal Scientific Institutions.
Your Profile
You hold a Master's degree
You have at least 9 years of management experience, including minimum 4 years in climate research or relevant climate transition field
Your technical skills and motivation are considered particularly important
Good knowledge of Dutch and English is an asset
