Scientific Report for a Just Transition in Belgium

The Belgian Climate Centre's Scientific Advisor, Soumaya Maydoub, was one of the authors of the new Scientific Report on Just Transition.

This is the very first scientific policy report in Belgium on just transition. It was established by the High Committee for a Just Transition between May 2022 and November 2023, under the presidency of Bea Cantillon and Marek Hudon.

The Belgian Federal Minister of Climate, the Environment, Sustainable Development and Green Deal, Ms Zakia Khattabi, has established the High Committee for a Just Transition in 2022. It was composed of 25 academics from different disciplines covering social issues, economics, democratic innovation and earth sciences.

The report itself is the result of a process mainly based on the scientific literature, interdisciplinary dialogue, and experts hearings. The authors conclude that "in order to institutionalize the just transition, this requires a real paradigm shift. This paradigm shift needs to happen if we want to avoid the worst, both at environmental, social but also economic levels. And Belgium should play both an inspirational and leading role. The just transition must urgently be accelerated, there is no time to waste".

The Scientific Report was officially presented during a two day conference, held in Brussels on 8 & 9 November 2023, in presence of Minister Khattabi. The Conference for a Just Transition in Belgium wanted to address the challenges of employment, social policy, retraining and the economy, in order to prepare Belgium's move towards a more sustainable society.

The report can be consulted at the bottom of this page, or via this link. The conference was organised by the Federal Institute for Sustainable Development.
