The Scientific Climate Council is a new body established by the law of 15 January 2024 on the governance of federal climate policy. This independent body will be primarily responsible for providing advice on progress and funding of federal climate policies. The work of this Council will be supported by a Permanent secretariat, hosted by the Belgian Climate Centre.
The Royal Decree of 18 April 2024 on the establishment of the Scientific Climate Council defines the procedure for the call for applications, the selection of experts and the functioning of the Council. Candidates must be able to demonstrate in-depth expertise in at least one of the areas covered by the law of 15 January 2024, namely :
- Climate change science
- Climate risks and adaptation
- International, European and national climate policy
- Economy and finance
- Energy and Technology
- Climate transition (including macroeconomic models, social dimension and behavioural aspects)
- Biodiversity and ecosystem services
